Fan Character Fix-Up
Series: Hamtaro
Character: Sarah -> Hazel
Hazel is a seamstress ham-ham. She enjoys scavenging, collecting, and putting together materials she finds to create outfits and accessories for ham-hams everywhere. She loves turning ideas into a reality, however her straight-forward and contrary attitude can cause her to clash with others who don’t see her vision.

Ah yes, my first ever fandom where I became part of a community. The Hamtaro fandom. Sarah was a character I created years before I joined onto my first forum (Amazing Ham-Ham Gang), however I wanted to use the design I had created during my time online so that design is the one you see above.
Sarah was basically a generic self-insert. Oddly enough I denied she was a self-insert at all (which was easy at the time since everyone believed my name to be “Tara Clifton,” which was a pseudonym I created so my mom would allow me to go on the forum). But I can say with honesty and certainty she was indeed a self-insert created to be paired with canon character Prince Bo.
She had the ability to shape-shift into other animals, as well as had a backstory about living in a parallel land of Rainbow Land, Aura Land. I was even writing a fic about her trying to find her homeland and family (She was owned by a girl named Tracy and had no recollection of who her family was) a lot of this was nixed because I got lazy. The shape-shifting was scrapped after one or two “gentle suggestions” from Deviantart users made me realize that it was a stupid idea to begin with.
[On that note, Her parents and two siblings were just as rainbow’d as Sarah is. One of Sarah’s siblings I plan to re-make later in this series]
Her personality was basically just “Sweet and Sassy.” The happy-going and “charming” sue who got along with almost everyone. She was made to be Prince Bo’s “Perfect” companion. Sarah was usually seen by his side and everything was hunky-dory between them 100% of the time. Remember that self-insert I mentioned who was kidnapped by Prince Darcy and forced into marriage? yeah this was her. Sarah was often a reoccurring damsel for Bo or any of my friends and their self-inserts and fan characters to rescue. On rare occasions Sarah even rescued herself without their help. Usually by the end of the day Darcy’s plan to marry Sarah had failed so Bo and Sarah could live generically ever after.
Many years Later-after AHHG shut down and Sarah had been done-away with entirely-I had attempted to re-design Sarah for old-times sake. As one of my first fan characters I can’t help but feel some attachment to her.
So along came Hazel. Who is Sarah’s spiritual successor in essence. With a far more believable color-scheme and design. As well as an improved summery.
Short and sweet is the way to go with summery if you ask me. No one wants to read something long and drawn-out with pointless little flourishes to make a character seem “overly-special.”
At least now Sarah’s in a better place than where she started as Hazel. I’d like to think.
